OPENING NIGHT GALA
The 2018 Cashiers Designer Showhouse will kick off with an Opening Night Gala on the evening of July 27th. After being among the first to view the Showhouse, guests will be invited to continue the celebrations on the estate grounds while enjoying music by Asheville Motown band, The Business, and delectable dining provided by Southern cooking show host, Vera Stewart. Stewart, who is easily recognizable by her winning smile and visible passion for her work, will also be hosting a book signing for her recently-released cookbook, The VeryVera Cookbook: Recipes from My Table.
Special guests of the evening include Danielle Rollins, Jennifer Boles, Ann & Sid Mashburn, and Dennis Schuhart. Throughout the evening, guests will sip wine from The Highlands Wine Shoppe, beer from The Satulah Brewing Co., handcrafted cocktails prepared by Cordial & Craft with Dixie Vodka, and a cigar bar featuring whiskey from ASW Distillery. To add to the excitement, attendees will be able brush up on their golf game with putting lessons from Bobby Grace of Bobby Grace Putters. In keeping with the Cashiers Historical Society, the historic Cashiers firetruck will be on-site for a fun photo-op alongside Cashiers’ fire chief, Randy Dillard. To make the evening extra special, guests will be invited to shop with our specialty vendors, including Hazen & Co, FireMoss Pottery, and Sapelo Skin Care, and participate in an exquisite silent auction benefiting the Cashiers Historical Society.
Tickets are $325; dress is Black Tie.
The afternoon will feature a tablescape demonstration with tastemakers Mallory Mathison Glenn and Clary Bosbyshell Welsh in collaboration with Leontine Linens and Michael Devine, Ltd. China beginning at 2 PM.
Following the workshop, there will be a special lineup of book signings in the attendee tent with Whispering Angel and hors d'oeuvres sponsored by The Chattooga Club served alongside. Meet Joan Huffman, author of Lady Frances, Julianne Taylor, author of designHER Book, and Tara Guérard, author of Weddings by Tara Guérard.
Starting at 1 PM, attendees can enjoy a flower arranging demonstration with Kakhi Wakefield of K Wakefield Designs. Kakhi will lead attendees in how to create a beautiful arrangement with flowers foraged from their backyards in Cashiers, NC.
Beginning at 2:30 PM, attendees can enjoy a healthy beauty discussion with the founders of Savannah-based luxury skincare brand, Sapelo Skin Care. Excitingly, guests will also be offered complimentary haircuts and styling provided by the talented team of Atlanta’s esteemed Van Michael Salon.
Esteemed Western North Carolina cake baker, Serena Owen of Sugar Cloud Baking Co., will offer a demonstration at 11 AM focused on crafting beautiful edible sugar flowers for cake decorating.
The afternoon will feature a presentation by interior designer, Douglas Hilton, titled “No the Painting Should Not Match the Sofa” at 2 PM. Contemporary artist, Cynthia Perryman, will be live painting throughout the discussion selling her beautiful artwork after. Attendees will also be treated to an afternoon artisanal cheese tasting courtesy of Calyroad Creamery.
Celebrating her deep understanding of the history of this beautiful part of the country, the morning will feature a presentation with Historian Jane Nardy at 11AM titled “Tales of Cashiers Valley.”
At noon, Amanda Wilbanks, owner of Southern Baked Pie Company, will discuss the entrepreneurial spirit behind the founding of her charming pie business while offering delicious samples. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase the signature pies.
At 2 PM, attendees will sip Whispering Angel while listening to a design panel discussion led by Jeffrey Dungan, Kirk Moore, and Bradley Odom. Following the panel discussion, guests will enjoy an afternoon cocktail reception featuring rosé courtesy of Whispering Angel and appetizers provided by Chef Linton Hopkins and Gina Hopkins of Atlanta-based Resurgens restaurants.
The day will begin at 10AM with Chief Randy Dillard of the Cashiers-Glenville Fire Department discussing the history of Cashiers alongside the famous Cashiers fire truck. To truly get the full experience, attendees can try on fire-fighting gear as they listen to the fascinating history of the valley.
During the afternoon, guests will enjoy a D-I-Y elderberry tea demo at 2PM followed by a book signing with Mary Palmer Dargan, RLA of her latest book, Timeless Landscape Design. Southern Baked Pie Company will also be serving their signature butter crust pies to accompany the elderberry tea.
The Bascom Center for Visual Arts’ Director of Ceramics, Frank Vickery, will lead a hand thrown ceramics demonstration at 11 AM alongside The Bascom’s day-long pop-up shop hosted by retail expert, Katherine Ford.
The afternoon features a “Ladies & Gents” craft cocktail hour and demonstration beginning at 2 PM with Asheville-based mixologist, Lexie Harvey of Cordial & Craft. Cocktails will utilize spirits sponsored by Atlanta-based ASW Distillery.
CLOSING CROQUET BRUNCH
The day begins with an informal fashion show at 11 AM featuring Kathryn Boyd Brolin’s Midheaven Denim line. Models will be sporting curated tops and handcrafted headpieces by production designer, Katherine Ford.
The noon hour features “In with the old! Out with the New!” by CODARUS’ Tyler Lynch of Thrifting with Tyler discussing shopping for antiques and strategies for reselling.
At 2 PM, Davis Picklesimer of Highlands Wine Shoppe and Dale Heinlein of Satulah Mountain Brewing Co. will host a presentation on preserving the plateau’s history followed shortly thereafter by a cooking demonstration with local caterer, Kristin Jorgensen of The Barn at 2:45 PM.
Additional vendors will be joining the Showhouse throughout the weekend including, but not limited to: Sea Island Forge Kettles, Croghan’s Jewel Box, and Mollie Jenkins Pottery.
Conversations with Chief Impact Officer, Erica Hall, of the Akola Project will begin at 12 PM for a chance to learn about Akola's work to train and employ Texas and Ugandan women to handcraft jewelry with fair & sustainable materials.
SPECIAL: Honorary guest Mark D. Sikes will give the keynote presentation "Beautiful" at 2 PM (requires additional ticket). Following the presentation, at 2:45 PM Mark will be signing his book with complimentary Whispering Angel rosé, a charcuterie board provided by Travis Boswell of The Orchard, and sweet treats from Sugar Cloud Baking Co.
We will close out the week with a Closing Croquet Brunch on August 5th with honorary guest and esteemed interior designer Mark D. Sikes. Guests are encouraged to wear their whites while enjoying live jazz music by New Orleans Jazz band The House Hoppers, croquet games, an Oakleaf Garden Popup with Kirk Moore, and putting lessons with Bobby Grace. There will also be live paintings by Katie Madden, Diane McPhail, Steve Mckenzie, and Jana Young of Jana Ink and Paper, an expansive full-service Bloody Mary bar brought to life by Cathead Vodka, Cordial & Craft, and Sister’s Sauce, craft beer from popular Atlanta brewery New Realm, delectable southern soul food prepared by Distinctive Design Events, and specialty vendors as well as an exciting silent partner— you won’t want to miss this!
