The proceeds from Membership Dues, Donations, and the annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse provide the operating income for the Cashiers Historical Society. The Historical Society's revenues support its mission to preserve and interpret the Zachary-Tolbert House and Cashiers Valley in order to inspire and to appreciate our past as guidance for the future.
The Cashiers Historical Society maintains an active Calendar of Events including:
- Heritage Apple Day
- The Jan Wyatt Academic Symposium
- Regional Heritage Rambles (two per year)
- Front Porch Family Fun Gatherings (three per year)
- Pinnacle Appreciation Reception (recognizing major donors)
- Music on the Grounds
- Founders Day (for over 100 area school children)
- Member Appreciation Events
In addition to its Calendar of Events, the Cashiers Historical Society:
- Provides guided tours of the Zachary-Tolbert House Museum.
- Maintains for the community the historic natural grounds surrounding the House Museum (used for family outings, nature walks, picnics, scout meetings, outdoor worship services, family reunions, and various social functions).
- Creates professional, electronic, & archival records of the Historical SocietyÕs nationally-recognized collection of artifacts, photographs, oral histories, and archeological activities.
- Funds new and on-going restoration projects.
- Maintains a fluid and informative website.
- Produces the annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse.
- Provides student service-learning opportunities through Summit Charter School, Blue Ridge School, and Western Carolina University.
- Partners with regional, state-based, and national organizations like The Bascom, The Mountain Heritage Center, Hunter Library, The Fine & Performing Arts Center, The Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, Museums in Partnership, The Appalachian Women's Museum, Old Salem, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, and the American Association for State and Local History.
- Maintains an active, hands-on internship program with Western Carolina University.
- Coordinates a variety of volunteer activities.
- Supports community preservation efforts by connecting needs with resources.
- Underwrites permanent and temporary museum exhibits, both on and off site.
- Sponsors the annual Village Heritage Award, recognizing the business or individual who preserves an historic building or site in a manner that best represents the unique village character of the community.
- Maintains a Historical Society representative on the Board of The Village Conservancy.
- Supports the The Village Council through both Board participation and financial contributions, which in turn provides leadership for sensitive, long-term town planning.
- Provides financial support for the Cashiers Community Council, an organization that funds essential community services and local improvement projects.
