Letter from the Chair

Over the past fourteen years, the Cashiers Historical Society has grown from an all volunteer to a more professional organization. With a full time Executive Director, Tim Osment, an Administrative Assistant, Mendy Queen, and an active board willing to sit in responsible committee positions, we have been able to both address challenges and accomplish our initiatives.

In order for the change in leadership to run smoothly, Tim Osment, Vice-Chairman Dave Dimling, and I have had a number of transition meetings. In the process, we have fine-tuned the board committees. Dave has been consulting board members and volunteers for their committee preferences for 2011.

Greetings from the Cashiers Historical Society. In keeping with our mission, “to preserve the heritage of Cashiers Valley through stewardship and education”, our many activities this season will serve to enhance your “sense of place”.

Already passed are Heritage Apple Day, our House Museum Opening Event, and the annual Jan Wyatt Symposium. Like in years before, these early events provided folks a great way to celebrate the return of warm weather and reconnect with friends, all while recognizing the history of our region.

Especially exciting are the upcoming series of Heritage Workshops, which will run from June through early August. They will include Woodworking with Skip Taylor, Wildflower Sketching and Painting with Kathie Wyatt Blozan, and Blacksmithing with Matthew Shirey. Please check our website for dates and times. All workshops will take place on the grounds of the Zachary-Tolbert House Museum. June also brings our Village Heritage Award on the 3rd, our Jane Nardy Ramble on the 10th, the Pinnacle Party on the 24th, and our annual Music on the Grounds on the 26th.

The annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse, the fundraiser for the Cashiers Historical Society and its grant recipient, the Cashiers Valley Community Council, will be spectacular this year. “Whisper Fade,” a beautiful home with a big view in the Wade Hampton Golf Club, will be the site. Susie and Denny Goode are this year’s Chairs. The Patron Party at Wade Hampton Golf Club is chaired by Ann Summers & Alice Stanly and the chair of the auction is Lana Valenta. Get your tickets early!

So, please join us for a summer of re-connecting and celebrating the history of this place we love in the mountains of North Carolina.

The excitement is building for the upcoming Cashiers Designer Showhouse and its timely theme “Green – Leaving a Legacy”. Designers are creating interiors that focus on at least one Green Tip. Landscape designers are busy growing organic gardens and plants friendly to our environment. Cashiers Merchants and Showhouse Shops are selecting eco-friendly products for their tables and shelves. Our goal is to provide an enjoyable and educational experience, encouraging all visitors to become “Greenovators,” focused on preserving our environment and the character of Cashiers for years to come.

Letter from the Chair

Greetings from the Cashiers Historical Society. I would like to open by welcoming David Dimling as the new Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee. Dave is new to our group but is certainly a familiar face within our community. Say hello to Dave when you see him out & about.

We are so excited and pleased with our 2009 Calendar of Events. We began in March with Heritage Apple Day, where participants grafted over 400 apple tree cuttings! The annual Jan Wyatt Symposium focuses on Mountain Music and the title is: “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” We will continue to have our Rambles and Front Porch Family Fun days throughout the summer and fall. In early June we will dedicate our newly restored Kitchen Dependency. At this year’s Pinnacle Party we will recognize the centennial of the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust with a new collaborative Nature Trail.

Community Connections

The Cashiers Historical Society played a major role in organizing and sponsoring the Mountain Landscapes Initiative (MLI) town planning workshop that took place last spring. Since then our members are stepping forward in positions of leadership in executing MLI goals. Ann Austin, Sarah Nelson, Eleanor Welling, Dave Dimling, Gillis MacKinnon, Mary Palmer Dargan, and other CHS members are actively participating in the newly formed Cashiers Village Council, a group of community non-profit and business leaders charged with moving forward on priorities such as the village path system, a town round-about, and affordable housing.
