4th Annual Founder's Day for 3rd & 4th Graders
All 3rd and 4th grade students in Cashiers Valley were
invited to the 4th Annual Founder's Day at the Zachary-Tolbert House.
The
focus this year was Wade Hampton III, a summer visitor to Cashiers. Each
child visited the 10 stations described below. "Jack Tale" and Story read by Mrs. Sue Nations,
superintendent of Jackson County Schools. Ron
Ruehl, award-winning videographer by the NC Office of Archives and History filmed
the event.
Graffiti at the Zachary-Tolbert House with Elaine Hunt and Katie Cochran: Students used a flashlight to explore the messages that had been inscribed on the walls of the house by those who lived there.

Churning Butter with Jack Lombard and Dinah Davis: Everyone got a turn at churning butter. Also each student made butter by shaking the cream in a jar.

|
Tea Party with Sandi Rogers: Students set the table for a tea party and took turns serving the snacks (Decision making and manners).

Ballroom Dancing with Claire Hoche: Basic ballroom dances were practiced. At the end of the day all came together to dance.

Croquet and Games still being played today with John Rivers.

Horseshoes with MoMo and Eddie Weatherby: The Weatherbys brought one of their horses and many of their horseshoes. All tried a hand a pitching the horseshoes in a friendly contest.

Archaeology Tour with Elaine Hunt and Katie Cochran: The children visited the latest Archaeology Site in which pre-historic spear points have been found indicating Indian occupation between 500 - 1500 B.C.

Black Bear with Kathy Sherrard and Anne Allison of the Appalachian Bear Center: Hands-on learning about bears.

Fishing with Friends from the Highland Hiker: Down
by the creek, children learned about fishing with a cane pole
Burlap stuffed bears with Myra Hunt: the
burlap bears were stuffed with real wool and closed with needle and spun thread.
