Cocktails and Characters, another members-only event hosted by the Cashiers Historical Society, brought Dwight Young of the National Historic Trust to Cashiers and gave members some insight about how the preservation of the Zachary-Tolbert House fits in with national preservation efforts. There is still time to become a member of the Cashiers Historical Society and take part in events schedule for July, August and September. CHS historian Jane Nardy will lead members on a second Ramble to Big Ridge on July 17th. Then, on July 28th, the Zachary-Tolbert House will be the site for a special event for the Cashiers-Highlands Chamber Music Festival, with tickets available to the public. The Zachary-Tolbert House is bringing History Alive every Saturday with tours running between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $5 per person, and CHS members are admitted free of charge. Private tours and gourmet picnics on the Zachary-Tolbert House grounds are available year round. To schedule a tour or picnic, or for more information on membership in the Cashiers Historical Society, call the CHS office, 828-743-7710; or drop by the Cashiers Valley Community Center on Highway 64 east, where the CHS office is located. Cocktails and Characters June 11, 2004
Chamber Music at the Zachary Tolbert House 28 July 2004
Brevard architect Doug Harris of Harris
Architects, Cashiers builder Ann and Mitchell Betty of Sweetwater Builders and
Cashiers owners-developers Roxanna Albury and Bill Chaiken created a
one-of-a-kind home for the 2004 Cashiers Designer Showhouse.
Located at The Point at Glenville Lake, the 4,200 square foot
Craftsman-style home and adjacent 1,600 square foot guest house are the ultimate
in mountain living.
Sixteen designers from Cashiers, Highlands and
Atlanta created rooms filled with antiques, exquisite fabrics, custom designs
and fabulous accessories. The three
bedroom main house features rosewood flooring throughout.
In the great room, a large stone fireplace is accented by cathedral
ceilings with light-filled eyebrow dormers and a balcony overlook from the
second floor reading nook. A large
screened porch with fireplace adjoins the great room and features fabulous
meadow and lake views. Perfect for
gatherings of family and friends, the large country kitchen, including an
oversized island and walk-in pantry, is complemented by an adjoining keeping
room with fireplace and breakfast nook. In
the formal dining room are built-in china cabinets, floor-to-ceiling
Craftsman-style columns and a stained glass pass-through to the kitchen.
Off the master bedroom suite, a covered, screened sleeping porch invites
naps on cool summer nights. On the second
floor are two additional bed and bathrooms, a sitting room and a library.
The large cottage-style home’s cedar shake
roof and board and batten and poplar bark exterior are complimented by stone
entrance accents and a Tennessee stone terrace overlooking the lake.
The two bedroom, two bath guest house is
perfect for guests. The large living area
and deck overlook the lake and the large
master bath features a walk-in tile shower and claw foot tub.
Hardwood floors complement
the floors in the main house.
Said Roxanna Albury, “The Craftsman style,
similar to the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, looks indigenous to our mountain
environment and is very compatible with our beautiful natural surroundings.”
Mrs. Albury and her husband recently returned from England’s Lake
District where they visited similar homes and she “reaffirmed my vision.
We are using top-notch craftsmen and emphasizing the use of natural
materials throughout our new home. It
will beautifully meet the needs for both family and friends.”
The seventh annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse
kicked off Friday, August 20 with the Picnic at the Point Patron Party.
The Showhouse was open Saturday, August 21 – Sunday, September 5, 10:00
– 4:00 daily and Noon – 4:00 on Sundays.
Showhouse beneficiaries were the Cashiers Historical Society and the Cashiers Valley Community Council.
Founder's Day 29 October 2004
A fiddler welcomes a school bus full of children to the Zachary-Tolbert House Founder's Day, October 29, 2004.
The children participated in many activities such as leather stamping,
butter churning, panning for gold,
touring the home, writing with quill pens, making rag dolls,
visiting with a Confederate Soldier, pioneer games and square dancing.
Representative Phil Haire read a pioneer story to the children under the tent.
